Below is a step-by-step how to start a blog tutorial.
If you’ve been thinking about starting a blog (or know someone who has) you should do it this week! Blogging is an awesome way to provide extra for your family, around your kid’s schedules.
My blog brings in $9,000+ a month.
…AND this week, if you start a blog through our link we will donate and cover a week’s worth of hot meals through Samaritan’s Purse for a child in need!
We’re donating and covering a week’s worth of hot meals for each blog started this week.
I’ll show you how to start a blog (no tech knowledge required).
- Start a blog today.
- We’ll automatically get notified when you start your blog (only if you use our link) and we’ll donate and cover a week’s worth of meals to feed and love kids in need.
We’ve also been able to partner up with SiteGround, so our tribe can start a blog for as little as $2.99 a month (over 60% off) and you can get a free domain (a $12 value). When you consider the kind of extra side income you can make (My blog brings in over $9,000 a month, to give you an idea), $2.99 a month is one of the most affordable side business you could start!

How to Start a Blog
1. Click here to start your blog on SiteGround (this will open in a new tab and I’ll walk you through exactly what to do).
If I was starting my blog today, SiteGround is where I would start my blog/website. You can think of SiteGround like renting a little plot of internet land for a really low startup cost. You can start a blog for as little as $2.99 a month. When you consider the kind of extra side income you can make (I make $9000+ a month blogging part-time, to give you an idea), $2.99 a month is one of the most affordable side business you could start!
Note: I would recommend steering clear of starting a blog on a free site, as it won’t have all the features you will need and it will be much harder to make money.

2. Next, click the White “Explore Services” button.

3. Then, click “Get Started” under Hosting for WordPress.
WordPress is the industry standard for blogging. When you start your blog on SiteGround, you’ll get WordPress for free. WordPress is where you will write your blog posts, design your blog, etc!

4. Then, click “View Plans.”
It should say $2.99 a month.

5. All you need is the StartUp plan—click “Select Plan” under StartUp. The most basic hosting plan is what I started my blog on as well!
SiteGround does have you pay for 12 months upfront but you get the discounted price and a free domain!

6. It’s time to decide your blog name! Your domain is the same thing as your blog name (my blog is The Realistic Mama and my domain is therealisticmama.com). Try your name blog idea in the “Enter your domain” field and then click Continue to search and see if it’s available.
The first name you try might not be available (it wasn’t for me either!), just keep brainstorming ideas/variations until you find one that is available! Don’t overthink it too much, you don’t want to get stuck at this step.

7. When you hit the field that says “Congratulations”—that means the name you tried is available! And you can begin filling in all your personal information and deciding a password, etc.
I still remember that nervous and excited feeling when I was first started my blog! I’m so glad I took that first step, it has been life changing to make full-time income with part-time hours.

8. When you scroll down to the “Extra Services” section, Domain Registration comes auto-checked and is free for the first year.
I highly recommend adding “Domain Privacy.” It keeps your personal information (name, phone, email) safe from the entire internet world. Absolutely worth a dollar a month.
You skip all the other extras, you can always add them later if you decide. When I started, I started with the cheapest plan, a free domain and domain privacy protection—that’s it.

9. Once you’ve filled everything out, you can click “Pay Now” and then there should be a Proceed or Continue button.
Now, we just need to install WordPress so you can write blog posts, etc. (WordPress.org comes free when you signup with SiteGround.) WordPress is the inside framework of your new blog! You can think of it this way: SiteGround is like renting a little plot of internet land, and WordPress is like your blog house (you will write your posts and design your blog inside of WordPress).

10. Installing WordPress is quick, you can login to your new SiteGround account and click “Set Up Site”

11. Then, click Select under “Existing Domain” and you should see your new blog name pop up below and you then you can click Continue.

12. Select “Start New Website” and then Select “WordPress.” It will prompt you to fill in your email and think up another Password and then click Continue. You might see a pop-up trying to sell on you on something you can just click “No, Thank You” and then just click “Finish.”
Woo hoo! WordPress should begin installing on your blog/website. This usually takes 1-2 minutes. Once it’s installed you can login! There is a little Setup Wizard you can use to select a theme (or you can use this tutorial to set up your theme—a theme is like the design of your blog. Themes help make your blog look very official.).
13. You can access your new blog anytime by going to your new blog domain and then adding “/wp-admin” to the end. (i.e. www.therealisticmama.com/wp-admin is how I access the backend of my blog, just replace therealisticmama with your new blog name) and then click login with Email and Password.

That’s it! Inside WordPress is where you will design your site (do this by installing a theme), write your first post, etc. Congratulations on your new blog, excited to see where your adventure takes you!
Let me know if you have any questions!
God bless,
Alida
P.S. Don’t forget to verify your domain—SiteGround should have sent you an email to Verify, make sure you click the link in the email so your domain is verified.
Thanks for Stopping By!

How do you make money off the blog
Great question! There are multiple ways: advertisements, sponsored posts, creating products, affiliate marketing and more! My income reports would have more detail: https://www.therealisticmama.com/category/make-money/income-reports/
So, I am NOT a blogger and have NO idea what blogging is or does! Can you explain to me what you would blog about? Thank you!
The possibilities are endless on what you can blog about! I recommend blogging about whatever it is you are most passionate and excited about! And don’t worry if someone else is already talking about the same topic, you’ll be brining a different perspective, style and voice. 🙂
Domain privacy protection doesn’t seem to be an option anymore. :/
I just created a test account and I still see it. After you’ve selected a domain, under Account Information, scroll down to “Extra Services” and it should be the second option.
I’ve started my blog and I’m at the welcome to Word Press. It’s asking if this is business or personal. What is the difference? I don’t remember your tutorial covering that but forgive me if I missed it.
I recommend hitting business if you are hoping to monetize your site in the future. I don’t know if it really matters which one you select.
Thank you for the chance to learn about blogging! I have been looking for some help on the idea.
Any ideas on how to figure out what to blog about? I am passionate and excited about a wide range of topics. I just don’t know which one to focus on. Is there a process you used, or can recommend?
We recommend blogging about topics you are most passionate about, what you find yourself talking about the most. Maybe that’s DIY, parenting, lifestyle, budgeting, food, etc. Even if someone else is already blogging about the topic, you bring your own voice, style and stories!
If you’re not quite sure what topics you can always choose a blog name that is broad and then you can test different topics and see which one sticks! Many bloggers I know have started with one topic and morphed to totally different ones as they go!
Can’t wait to see where your blogging adventure takes you!
