It will be 4 years in June! Getting married young is not for everyone but it’s been absolutely perfect for us. Everyone told us the first year of marriage would be SO HARD, we kept waiting but it came and went and besides a few small bumps it was glorious. Why?
Did we just get lucky? Maybe. But I think there has to be at least a partial reason for it.
4 things we did & still do:
- We went it to our marriage knowing marriage requires work & selflessness.
- We were young, so we weren’t stuck in our ways — we created habits together rather than separately.
- We knew communication is the key to success.
- We didn’t fight about money.
Did you know: “More than a quarter, or 27 percent, of those who are married or living with a partner said disagreements over money are most likely to prompt a spat.” — AICPA Survey
Avoid fights about money:
1. Live under your means.
Just because your making more does not mean you have to spend more. Find ways to keep your budget UNDER the amount you’re brining in. Check out this detailed list on creative ways to save money.
2. Save money in unexpected places!
When we first got married we started looking at phone plans together — I remember being shocked at the prices! So I started looking at Prepaid plans and realized we could save over $50 a month by using Prepaid phones! Why spend the extra money unless you have to?
Take a look at the T-Mobile Simply Prepaid™ plan for example:
- For just $40 dollars a month get 4G LTE data with unlimited talk and text.
- No overages, credit check, or annual service contract required
- Make sure the prepaid plan comes with good reception! If you aren’t careful some prepaid plans have slow data, a spotty network, and second rate phones/less of a selection of phones. However with Simply Prepaid you get 4G LTE data on T-Mobile.
- My favorite part: If you’re like me and like to actually touch and feel your phone first you can stop by Walmart and browse the different phones & plans.
Note: You do have to pay for your phones upfront, so make sure you plan for that expense. The Galaxy Avant is a great all around phone. When we did the math, the savings was still absolutely worth it!
Now start thinking about all the better things to spend the money you save on! Since we already had an emergency fund saved up we decided to set aside our extra $50 a month for travel money!
3. Have an emergency fund.
Save a little extra here and there whenever you get a chance. If you have a hard time saving that extra money, set up an automatic deposit from your checking account into a new savings account.
Having that extra cushion can really help prevent arguments especially when things like an unexpected car repair come up.
Thanks T-mobile for inspiring this post! Can Simply Prepaid™ plans help your marriage and family?
