Headed on vacation? Or reminiscing about one you just went on? Want to save the picture and memories in a totally awesome way? Welcome to the VACATION SMASH BOOK! A smash book is a totally awesome twist to a traditional scrapbook. Think scrapbook except quick, easy, unique and with a twist of messy. And below you’ll find some fun ideas for “smashing” your vacation memories into a book!
If you’ve never heard of a Smash Book read a great sum up and step-by-step tutorial here.
Once you know the gist of what a Smash Book is, I wanted to share with you how to make a vacation style smash book by showing you examples of mine.
Peek inside our book:
A map makes the perfect backdrop for a page! If you don’t have one stop by a visitors center while you’re gone. For an added touch draw a heart around the location you went to! Or for road trips draw a cute dotted line that shows your travel route.
Smash all small paper memories together on one page. Ticket stubs, bus passes, hotel key cards, etc.
Save little notes, scribbles, jokes, everything! For our honeymoon, we had a jar that we saved a little here and there all through our engagement for spending money. A few days before the wedding we counted it up — rolling coins ended up as a fun date and I saved the scrap we tallied it up on!
A few more examples/ideas:
We got lucky on one of our trips, and there was an overbooked flight so we volunteered to wait for a later flight in exchange for ticket vouchers! I of course had to save the vouchers so I paper clipped them into our book.
Every single book and page is going to look different. Have fun and enjoy “smashing” your travel memories in whatever way you want! Bring your book with you and work on some of the pages while you’re on your trip. Bring along some double sided tape or paper clips and “smash” memories as they happen.
My last advice is don’t make it too complicated, keep it simple — the whole point of the smash book is there are no rules except get your pictures and memories in the book! I used to be too Type A about my projects, I wanted my Smash Books to look super artsy and creative but when I did that I always got behind and it became less and less of a “smash” book and more or an organized scrapbooking project. Learn from me and let your book be messy!
Remember always seek adventure so your life doesn’t pass you by!

This is a great way to remember your trip. I have never heard of a smash book until I read your post. Thank you for sharing.
This is so cool! I was wondering what brand the notebook was in your photos? I’ve used that one for a gift and I really liked it but I can’t remember the brand.
The book in the picture happened to be on sale at a local store here. We’ve used all different kinds of books, for different projects. We do usually end up with some blank pages at the back, but I don’t worry about it too much.
LOVE THIS!!! I’ve been doing something like this for most of my life but never hit on the perfect idea! You did great!!!!
