We are married and have a kid but who says we can’t still date? I never want to be “too old” or “too married” for the mushy, gushy looks, the smiles, the laughs and the serious heart to hearts that can come alive during a date.
Sometimes all anyone needs is a little inspiration. (Drum roll please.) I’m going to let you in on one of our best kept secrets, The Choose Anything Game, the most unique $10 date.
This date, along with 174 other awesome dates, can be found in my book, 175 Best Date Ideas. The perfect book for any couple on a budget or just looking for something fun to do that’s out of the ordinary.
Here are the rules and how this date started:
It was nearing the end of the month and we still had $10 in our spending envelope! So we hopped in the car with our $10 and started brainstorming ideas. We decided to drive to the closest grocery store and divide the money equally and see who could me more creative with their $5 to find something fun for the night.
We call it the “Choose Anything Game” and the only rule is you can’t overspend. It ended up being perfect, Corey chose a dinner item and I, of course, chose a chocolaty dessert.
The flexibility of this game is endless. It doesn’t have to be a grocery store. Here are some more ideas:
- Target is actually my favorite place because of the possibility of buying something other than food.
- I’m not a huge fan of Walmart but they do have a $5 movie bin.
- At a dollar store you can afford several items
- A craft store adds a whole new dimension to the game
- You can also pool your money and work as a team to buy one “larger” item at your favorite store.
We almost always use the $10 cap, but on occasion we will bump it up a little. Next time I’m actually tempted to see how creative we could be on even less. You can also take your kids on a date and let them join in the fun, I always love watching how creative kids can be, they blow us out of the water for sure!
The goal is to have fun, be goofy, and most importantly be creative. Try it out and in the comments let us know what your $10 date ended up looking like.

This is a great idea. We don’t necessarily budget very well – my husband just says “stop spending, will ya?” But…I could totally see us having fun with this challenge. And I say challenge because it would be tough for me. I bet he would give me his money if I asked very nicely!

Cute idea! Afraid my hubby would get a $5 tool…LOL.

Such a sweet and practical idea. I’m so happy we have met and wish we did at SITS, but we are on-line friends now. Read your About Me page & I’m so inspired by you and your wisdom — acquired at such a young age. So smart!!! I’m over twice your age & wish I practiced what you live by — embracing life & not over-spending, too.
Beautiful way to spend $10!!

We did a $ date, idea from Dating Divas. It was so fun. Dinner: went to 3 different drive thrus and spent a dollar each at each stop. Then we went to the dollar store and each had to spend $3 on the other person, then we went to the $ show. The items from the $ store were awesome. We have been married 32 years and enjoy dates even more now. We aren’t on a tight budget, but sometimes these kind of dates are more interesting than going to the Symphany!

Thank you for the wonderful idea! We have been married for 12 years and live on a very tight budget. But we can always find $10 and we both love to find good deals. Can’t wait to try it 🙂
