Our little man is here and we’re now happily a co-sleeping family of 4 on our new Purple mattress.
I originally thought my daughter would out grow our family bed before little man arrived, but as we got closer and closer to my due date I realized we actually weren’t ready for that transition yet. So now I had a problem, our queen bed was already too small for three of us, there was no way we could fit another little human in comfortably. So, with only 2 months to go till my due date I started mattress shopping but very quickly got overwhelmed.
That’s where Purple comes in, thank goodness! They offered to send me a king (yay, more space!) mattress in exchange for a review. I agreed, under one condition, if I didn’t like it I would send it back without a review. I didn’t expect that to be the case though, since we have a cushion of theirs, from the egg test, and we all love how awesome it feels! I couldn’t wait to try that same material in a full blown mattress.
You can see our egg test on the cushion here (notice I’m still pregnant in the video!):
Basically the egg test goes to show that if Purple can support an egg without breaking it will support your body perfectly too.
You should have seen us the night our mattress arrived, we were pumped from all the anticipation.
Bonus: They sent it straight to our door!
My husband was super excited it was here but I was worried, the packaging was tiny compared to how big and poofy a mattress should be. Had I misunderstood? Was it just a mattress topper not a mattress?
My husband chuckled and told me not to worry, I was so confused! Looking back I can laugh at the whole thing but that night I was genuinely concerned.
Here’s Corey bringing it inside, 9 month pregnant me wasn’t any help!
We laid the mattress straight on the floor, the way I don’t have to worry about our little ones falling off the bed and getting hurt. It expanded into a full sized king mattress – whew!
Eek! I was giddy and excited to try it out!
Adjustment Period
Now that we’ve been sleeping on it for 3 months I can honestly say we love it! It’s the perfect balance between medium firm and firm. It did take some adjusting through, the first few weeks I wasn’t so sure about it but they had warned me that that was usual.
“You may have an adjusting period…. Those who are coming from a firm mattress need to learn that the hard bed was a compromise for the good of their back alignment. Purple will take care of their alignment even better AND support it AND comfort their hips; but it may take a little time for their body to UNLEARN how to sleep with compromises. Same story, different tune for those coming to Purple from a soft mattress. They need to adjust to proper alignment AND support AND pressure relief. Their body has gotten used to some bad posture compromises while attaining some amount of sleep. Now they are compromise-free and experiencing NO PRESSURE. Their body might unlearn it all right away. But it may take a couple weeks. Still, they have time to really learn and return it if needed; no pressure.”
It made total sense and after a few weeks my body adjusted to the new bed and now it’s my favorite place to snuggle in night after night! My husband didn’t even notice an adjustment period and fell in love with the bed from night 1.
It’s no surprise that Purple, who started off on Kickstarter, blew way over their funding goals! The quality and pricing just can’t be beat.

I was really excited to find your review, but after reading it I’m still left with a LOT of questions. Could you please tell me more about cosleeping on a Purple mattress? How did you feel that the children were safe? Did they sink into the bed? What about when you sneak out of bed and leave them sleeping there? How did you handle a newborn on this bed? How was breastfeeding? Etc.
You’re the only one I see posting anything about cosleeping + purple so I really hope you can help me out!!! I’m pregnant with a toddler and very interested in the Purple but nervous about being safe with it. Thanks so much!!!

Sorry about the delay in replying to this. One of the things we love about the Purple mattress is the way it distributes weight. We can sneak out of bed and a little one laying next to us won’t even notice. Unlike other mattresses, where everyone seems to roll into the biggest person and you can’t get out of bed without EVERYONE waking up.
Co-sleeping is a topic near and dear to my heart. I think little ones, especially newborns highly benefit from it. A newborn just spent 9 months connected to you, they feel most comfortable and safe near you. I also prefer co-sleeping since I breastfeed so I don’t have to get up and out of bed multiple times at night, I’ve gotten pretty good at side-lying nursing. Of course, different things work for different families and for different kids, do what you feel most comfortable and safe with. Some choose to have a bassinet or co-sleeper right next to the bed. I felt comfortable enough having my newborn sleep on my chest and I simply slept on my back all night. As they grow older I’ll nestle them next to me, my body seem to be very aware of the little one next to me while I’m sleeping. I think most woman are wired to be in sync and aware of their babies when they first become moms. I’m always a little more cautious of the littles ones near dad, especially when they are really little. He seems to sleep deeper. I also may be overly worried, but I always choose breathable blankets for us when babies are in the bed with us, knitted blankets, etc. Or I’ll bundle baby warm and then only pull blankets up to hip level. Of course, all of this is just my personal thought, do research and trust your motherly instincts.
Hope that helps! Cheers!

So you deem it safe for infants? We’re expecting twins in September and want to get the king. My husband was unsure if the materials used were nontoxic, safe enough for infants.
Alida says
This is a great question! I honestly haven’t done that much research on mattress toxins but now you’ve got me wondering! When I find some extra time I’ll probably dig into this!

How’s your experience now after almost a year of using the mattress in the floor? Do you think the warranty is void if the mattress is not used in their bed frame?
Alida says
Not sure about the warranty but we are loving still loving our mattress – now more than ever! It’s a great mattress.

I’m 4 weeks away from delivering baby number 2 and my question is about breast feeding. I know you said that you side nursed personally but did you ever try to or need to sit up? Was that a struggle? My daughters bed has a memory foam topper on it and I can barely move in her bed, I am concerned this will have a similar feeling and I do not want to struggle. We need to make a decision and fast on a mattress since babe is coming soon!
Alida says
Nope. I found it easy to get up and maneuver around and didn’t personally have any struggles! We still have our mattress 2.5 years later and I still love it!

How is sleeping on the edges? I also cosleep and have three kids and sometimes they all find their way into bed with my husband and I. I’ve read edge support isn’t the best on the purple original (that you have) but wondering how you feel? Since many nights some of us have to sleep on the very edge 🙂
Alida says
I haven’t noticed a problem with the edges but our mattress has always been directly on the floor and we only have 2 kids that make their way into our bed, so not sure if that has anything to do with it.
