You started a blog (if you haven’t, start here).
You setup the foundation.
There are a million rabbit trails out there but what is worth your time and investment?
I make six figures blogging part-time hours.
And in this post, I hope to show you the things that have had the best results in my business (things I would absolutely do again if I was starting from scratch).
I average 10-20 hours a week. I am currently setting myself up to work fewer hours while still growing my business and income. I like to call this blogging smarter, not harder.
I am always asking myself—what is the best use of my time? What projects will bring in the highest income return? I blog so I can spend more time with my family, so I want the time I spend blogging to have a high return.
If I were to start a blog today, these are the exact steps I would take and products I would use. The steps that helped me get to were I am.
Are you ready?
Blogging has an extremely low startup cost compared to other businesses. You’ll invest into your new business, start making money as SOON as you can and then invest a portion of what you make back into the business for more growth. How fast you move through the steps below is completely up to you, your budget and your motivation. Some of the steps come at no cost and others will require an investment.
Note: I highly recommend opening a separate bank account for blog income and expenses to flow through and don’t forget to save all blog related receipts for tax deductions.
If you haven’t started a blog yet, click here for a step-by-step tutorial. For a complete blog foundations setup-up course use Successful Startup. Then you’ll be ready to really grow your blog + income through the steps below.
Note: If you have completed our Successful Startup Course you are past Phase 1 & 2 and you’re welcome to jump to Phase 3. Everyone else, keep reading…
#1. If possible, commit to a minimum of 10 hours week on your blog. Schedule out this time (block it out for blog work ONLY). Strategically use your time on the highest ROI projects (listed below).
#2. Write 1-2 quality posts a week—focus on quality over quantity.
- Make sure your images are quality images.
- Here is a great free blog post on improving your images so that they drive more pageviews.
- Use PicMonkey or Canva to create your images (I prefer PicMonkey).
- If you are taking images yourself (make sure you learn how to take and edit them so they look professional).
- Stock images are also a great option for many niches (I like to use Deposit Photo and Pixabay)
- Use catchy titles
#3. Begin a newsletter as soon as possible. Collect email addresses and start sending a weekly newsletter.
- Create an awesome freebie that to give away as an opt-in incentive. Keep it simple but make sure it’s valuable. I use ConvertKit and love them because of the options and features they have. If your budget is tight you can start with MadMimi and switch to ConvertKit as soon as your blog can afford it.

Focus on Pinterest.
While there are some exceptions, Pinterest in generally the faster place for new bloggers to grow their page views quickly (and requires the least amount of time once it’s set up). Once you have it setup, it’s fairly easy to automate.
#1. Create one Pinterest board exclusively for your content. When you publish a new post pin it here. This is a great board for people to scroll through to get a good feel for you blog.
#2. Setup additional boards on each of the categories your blog covers (i.e. DIY projects, Recipes, Parenting Tips, etc). Include a healthy mix of your content and other’s on these category boards.
#3. Join several Pinterest Group Boards on the topics that your blog covers. (Make sure your images are up to par with the other images being pinned to that board before requesting to join).
#4. Use Tailwind to automate your pinning once you have 10-15 posts that are doing well on Pinterest.
I like to use Tailwind to automate pins for all the following to Pinterest…
- Pins to my top blog posts
- Pins to my top newsletter opt-in pages
- Pins directly to my top product sales pages
Once I set them up inside of Tailwind, they automatically pin on a schedule and create passive revenue. This is partly how I was able to take 3 months of maternity leave off and still make thousands of dollars each month.
Tailwind has something called SmartLoop, which will pin the pins on a continual schedule to all appropriate boards. For example, I might set a pin for my lead magnet go out once every 3 days to all 15 boards that are applicable (many of these are group boards). It would take 45 days for it to pin to all the boards and then it would start over at the beginning again!
Tailwind has tons of tutorials that teach you how to setup your SmartLoop. You can try a free trial of Tailwind here.
#5. Make sure you have Google ads setup on your blog (switch to AdThrive once you have 100,000 pageviews a month) and include affiliate links throughout your posts when applicable. Stick to the quality over quantity rule when it comes to affiliate links, make sure the affiliate product fits your audience, pays well and can we weaved into multiple posts.
Note: Sponsored posts are also a great way to make great income through your blog (but they do not create residual income like affiliate income and your own products do).
It’s time to create a product and then use Facebook ads and a sales funnel to sell it!
Creating your own product is not as scary as it seems and the income potential is unlimited when it’s your own product. You also have way more control over it and often it’s the very best way to help your readers solve their problems.
And FB ads are an amazing way to get your product out there to people who aren’t even following you yet—the year I started implementing Facebook ads, our blog income tripled.
