Messy Play for Kids!
At the thought or mention of messy play, I catch myself shuttering. The idea of paint on the table, clothes with unidentifiable goop, and sticky messes tracked on the floors leaves me to want to play it safe with a coloring book. But what fun is that? Sensory Play in Early Childhood Development helps stimulate children’s senses which helps them deal with situations socially, emotionally and the list goes on! I have learned that it’s ok to color outside the lines and not hover over my child but instead let them explore their environment.
So here is where I suck it up as a mom and let my kids get tactile with messy play! My favorite messy play activity is shaving cream bathtub paint. This homemade paint is easy, keeps the kids entertained for hours, and its almost like they are cleaning the bath tub for you, right? For easy clean-up my go to is bleach, I rinse the tub out fill it with hot water and add a cup of bleach. One of my favorites is Clorox’s My Ultimate Care Bleach, it doesn’t have that strong chlorine smell. Give the tub a few swipes, rinse and now I don’t have to clean my tub for at least a week. See all of our favorite shaving cream crafts here.
Another favorite messy play activity is paint. I cringe. My toddler can easily re-decorate my house quickly if we don’t have the right activity, my go to paint project is rubber band splatter. An old pop-tart box, rubber bands, and some paint and you have a noise making, paint splattering, great time! A way to save my sanity and clothes we like to cut a plain white t-shirt in half, add some ribbon ties, this makes an apron of sorts and can be slipped over what we are already wearing. Once we are done, simply take off the white aprons and pre-treat with Clorox. Throw in the wash on warm with my favorite scented Care Bleach and they come out new every time!
I am one picky mama when it comes to my kids clothes, they are meant to be played in not ruined in the laundry. The only way I have found to keep my whites truly white and not dingy is Bleach. Its gentle enough to use on my toddlers clothes without any worries of side effects. It also helps that my favorite bleach is exclusively available at Target my guilty pleasure! {And if you use Target’s Cartwheel App it’s 10% off!}.
There are so many ways to let kids explore their environment. Start small and work your way up! They are only little once, and I want to make sure that I get to aid in all of their life experiences while I can! What are some of your favorite messy play activities?
