Remember when chores were fun? Yeah, right…. me neither! But they are a huge part in raising a confident child so I want to break the boring cycle of chores and teach my child that doing chores and being responsible can also be fun! What better way than with the best toys? It was love at first sight for our Next Generation Doll. What better ways to teach responsibility than letting a child lead by example?
Our doll Olivia has been helping us around the house in getting into a chore routine. Chores always seem to carry a negative connotation but Olivia has helped change that and has made them fun. The child gets to be the Parent, which they always love!
4-Steps for Chore Success!
1. Set the Expectation.
Children need boundaries. Set a clear forecast of what you expect. For younger kids this can be done with pictures, for older kids that can read, a simple chore chart will do. Insert these daily tasks into their routine (see #4, below, for a chore chart). Once the chores are part of a daily habit the kids will merge these into their lives and they will become second nature.
2. Don’t Give-Up When they do.
Kids have bad days too, and that’s ok! If the expectation is set, don’t give-up on them when they are whiny or fussy. Get on the child’s level and explain what needs done, and follow-through.
3. Have Fun.
This is where Target comes in! (I spend hours in there, I love #TargetToys!) There new line of Next Generation Dolls is great! We went to the store together, and made it a Mommy Daughter Date, and picked the newest member of our family, Olivia. Once we brought ‘Olivia’ home we set the expectation that ‘Olivia’ would be helping with chores and teaching our kids to be big helpers! We told our daughter that she needed to show ‘Olivia’ how to do the chores and then ‘Olivia’ could help her complete the tasks! This has gone AMAZING! Get the idea? Get to Target and get your inspiration! P.S. These dolls are great for Boys too!
4. Lastly, Tailor the Chores Based on Age.
Essentially, don’t set them up for failure. Know their limitations, but challenge them. A 2 year old cannot be expected to effectively sweep a floor, but a 10 year old can. Find what works for your routine in your home! What works for one might not work for the next, we have helped below with some great chore chart printable to get you started.

Never be afraid to mix it up! If a child is performing well, give them a new task to try. Praise their accomplishments, whether through monetary rewards or verbal praise. Kids want to help and please. I often will let my younger kids help with older chores, knowing they cannot accomplish them fully but because they want to be like me. They want my approval that they are helping satisfy a need, and I love that! We are raising our future and if I can break the Chore cycle and make it fun I will! One of my favorite quotes is:
