Our first big fall outing this year was apple picking! We went out last weekend, and ended up with more apples than I thought possible, which left me scrounging for new ways to use apples! Here are my 6 favorite ideas for this week:

1.Before using my apples for food, we did some Apple “Bobbing” with my preschoolers – great for fine motor skills! And it got us outside in this beautiful weather.
2. Apple Stamping! I let the kids pick one apple to use for a stamp, and sliced them in half and presto! They had a stamp!
I chose to do lunch bags, and send them the next morning. Note, the continued fall theme – I’m obsessed. Mine were “mixed media” (markers and paint), because I didn’t have orange or brown paint. If you don’t have any paint, they could always trace the apples and color them in with markers! Or glam it up with some apple stickers, if you’re really prepared.
3. Make Applesauce. I love Ree Drummond’s recipe on The Pioneer Woman.
Confession: I never peel my apples. I haven’t peeled an apple in 15 years. Apple peels have fiber. People need fiber. (And peeling apples is time-consuming). That’s all. And I have an apple corer. Because that’s important.
We picked Jonathon, Red Delicious, and Gold Delicious!
4. Apple Chips are the best snack for fall! If you have a dehydrator, this is a straightforward process. I have a dehydrator on my wish-list right now, so I make mine in the oven – they don’t get quite as crispy, but I still like them! And again – no peeling for me.
5. Bake Apple Bread! I love Apple Pie and Crisp, but we’ve been on a dessert-free kick lately, so Apple Bread was the compromise. This recipe is very simple, but tasty! And I love all bread, so sweetening with apples is just a lovely bonus.
The hardest part of apple-foods are that you normally have to cut the apples – not a very kid-friendly task. But check out this cute Fruit Cutting Set – great for fine motor skills, and lets the little ones “join in”.
6. Call your grandma. Ok, so this isn’t specifically apple-related. But my grandma would always make applesauce with us in the fall. So after all my apple-making endeavors wrap up, I always call her to catch up. Even if you don’t have apple memories like I do, I encourage you to give someone special in your life a call!
