I’m ready for a baby but is my body ready?
The best advice anyone ever gave me was to prepare my body for at least 3-4 months before getting pregnant. So I asked myself, Is my body ready? months before we even started trying for a little one. For those of you who think ahead like me, give these a shot and set yourself up for success!
6 Things to Do Before You Get Pregnant
1. Improve your eating habits. I love this series by Donielle Baker on traditional diets and how to implement them to help increase the odds of conception.
Note: If you are going to do a detox diet do this at least 3 months BEFORE you start trying for your little one. You don’t want the toxins that you’re body is getting rid of to go to the baby.
2. Get plenty of sleep.
3. Start taking prenatal vitamins. I always started taking my prenatal vitamins 3 months early.
4. Drink 3 quarts of water a day. And continue this habit throughout your pregnancy.
5. Make a before baby “bucket list.” A list of things you want to do before you have a big belly and your little one shows up. For us, it was traveling. We headed out of the country knowing it would be our last big trip for a while, since we knew we wouldn’t want to travel too much while the baby was little.
6. Get rid of unneeded added stress. Stress is a silent killer, so the more of it we can eliminate, the better. Some stress can’t be avoided and is part of life but more often than not we allow a lot of extra stress in by saying yes to too many things or worrying about things we don’t have control over anyway. I’ve also found essential oils to be a huge help in calming my body (you can read more about them here).
When you’re ready to start trying, try not be anxious. I always recommend having a “mini” party each month if you find out you aren’t pregnant, yet. Go out to your favorite restaurant, enjoy an alcoholic drink, etc. Try to make it something fun that you can still enjoy rather than just bumming out all day.
If you’re reading this and already struggling with infertility, my heart goes out to you! There are few things harder than wanting to have and hold your own little baby but your body won’t seem to let you.
Positive changes, no matter how small, is always a step in the right direction for your own mental & physical health. You can still benefit from this list. You never know when you might be surprised with an unexpected little one!
